Taisho Pharmaceutical has focused on the power of chitosan to combat cholesterol. Normally, serum cholesterol is secreted into the small intestine as bile acids by the liver, and then part of it is reabsorbed by the liver. Chitosan inhibits the reabsorption of cholesterol in the stool, thus reducing serum cholesterol levels. <Chitosan is particularly effective in lowering LDL cholesterol and can therefore be used to improve the diet of those who are concerned about their LDL cholesterol.

What is chitosan?
Chitosan is an insoluble dietary fibre produced by processing chitin, which is found in the shells of crabs and shrimps.
